Dana Lixemburg

KBr begins its new season with a dose of photography with the exhibition Dana Lixenberg: American Images. It brings more than three decades of work by the Dutch photographer to KBr, tracing her long engagement with portraiture, documentary photography and the social landscape of the United States. Her images often focus on people and communities shaped by visibility, vulnerability, fame, inequality and resilience.
The exhibition includes portraits of famous figures such as Tupac Shakur, Biggie Smalls, Prince, Kate Moss and Leonard Cohen, alongside major long-term projects including Imperial Courts, made over decades spent in a Los Angeles public housing complex. It also features work on homelessness in Jeffersonville, Indiana, and the Iñupiaq community of Shishmaref, Alaska.
Lixenberg’s photography asks us to look carefully and stay with her subjects. The result is a powerful insight into American people and life.
