Hard Truths

Marianne Jean-Baptiste returned to Mike Leigh’s world in 2024’s Hard Truths to play Pansy, a middle-aged London woman whose fear and frustration have curdled into seemingly limitless anger. She snaps at supermarket staff, strangers and her own family, leaving her husband Curtley (David Webber) and deeply withdrawn son Moses (Tuwaine Barrett) walking on eggshells. Her younger sister Chantelle (Michele Austin), meanwhile, is warm, sociable and surrounded by the easy affection of her daughters, and the contrast only sharpens Pansy’s sense of isolation and visceral, destructive anger.
The film marks Jean-Baptiste’s first collaboration with Leigh since Secrets & Lies in 1996, and her performance is a startling mix of fury, vulnerability and exquisitely bleak comedy. Leigh finds pulverising drama in minuscule domestic encounters, gradually revealing the fear beneath Pansy’s hostility but not offering any easy explanations or resolutions. An intensely observed and grimly memorable exploration of family, loneliness and emotional damage.
