Based on real events, Richard Linklater's 2023 romantic crime comedy stars Glen Powell on endearing, charming form as Gary Johnson, a mild-mannered philosophy and psychology professor who leads a quiet academic life of cats, birdwatching and minimalist interior design. He also works for the New Orleans Police Department, however, assisting in sting operations. An undercover detective who portrays fake hitmen to solicit and then prevent murder-for-hire schemes is suspended for brutality, and Gary is unwillingly ushered into the role.

Much comedy ensues as Gary unexpectedly flourishes in his new role, and the film fully ignites when he meets Madison (Adria Arjona), a vulnerable, intriguing woman looking to end her abusive marriage. A treat for Linklater enthusiasts and casual fans alike.
