The late, late, peerlessly great David Lynch didn't retire from making films after 2006's Inland Empire, but it did turn out to be the last full-length feature he made, and after it, for a variety of reasons, he concentrated on painting and other artistic pursuits, as well as making the 2017 series Twin Peaks: The Return and the Netflix short What Did Jack Do?

Inland Empire is one for the completists and the superfans, but there are plenty of those when it comes to Lynch. The director self-financed it and he and his neighbour and friend Laura Dern shot it on digital video, coming up with the story - which follows an actress on a supposedly "cursed" film whose own life becomes entangled with that of the character - as they went along.
