Korean cinema takes over the big screen again as the city’s dedicated festival returns with around 20 films spanning blockbusters, independent filmmaking and plenty in between. Now in its sixth edition, the Korean Film Festival Barcelona has grown rapidly alongside the global appetite for South Korea’s brilliant film culture.

This year’s big focus is Park Chan-wook, with a retrospective exploring the unforgettable women of his films through Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, Joint Security Area, Stoker, Decision to Leave and The Handmaiden. Other highlights include Yeon Sang-ho’s The Ugly, historical phenomenon The King’s Warden and zombie comedy My Daughter Is a Zombie.

The festival also goes beneath Korea’s mainstream films with its Indies de Seúl strand, which presents new thrillers, dramas, animation and independent work. There’ll also be talks on Korean film and television, shorts, workshops and cultural activities. Check out the full programme online now.
