No Other Land
By Kit Macdonald

Co-directed by the Palestinian-Israeli collective of Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, the horribly timely No Other Land has been making headlines since it was released in 2024, and especially since it scooped the Oscar for Best Documentary at this year's Academy Awards. Shot over five years from 2019-2023, it tells the story of the Palestinian community of Masafer Yatta in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, which faces destruction and displacement after being designated an Israeli military “firing zone".
Using Basel Adra’s own archive footage alongside original film, it follows house demolitions, the filling in of wells and many other aspects of the violent disruption caused by the occupation. An unlikely alliance also forms with Abraham, an Israeli journalist, their friendship underscoring the deep inequality in their personal freedoms under the occupation. A harrowing must-watch as Israel's flagrant genocide in Gaza goes on.
