The – and let's not understate this – unbelievably excellent Frances McDormand stars in this quiet but powerful meditation on life outside the margins of conventional American society, based on Jessica Bruder’s nonfiction book. She plays Fern, a rootless 60-year-old who has lost everything after the Great Recession and the death of her husband and who adopts a nomadic lifestyle in her van, moving from one temporary job to another in farms, factories and Amazon warehouses and traversing the great open spaces of the western United States.

It's an incomparably moving portrait of resilience, loss and freedom that mixes documentary and fiction and which deservedly won the Oscar and the Golden Globe for best film and direction and the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, among a host of other gongs.
