Roman Holiday
By Kit Macdonald

Hollywood glamour meets European charm in William Wyler's wonderful 1953 romcom, Audrey Hepburn's first major role, for which she won an Academy Award for Best Actress. She stars as Princess Ann, a young royal weary of her tightly controlled life who escapes her handlers during a diplomatic trip to Rome and secretly explores the city.
Gregory Peck turns in the other iconic performance of the movie as Joe Bradley, an American journalist who initially sees her as a scoop, but falls for her (and she for him) as they spend a beautiful day exploring the city together. Rome itself is the other main character, and doesn't she look a treat in this light-hearted yet poignant blend of humour, romance and melancholy.
