The Shining
By Kit Macdonald
Not much is left to be said about Stanley Kubrick's utterly perfect 1980 adaptation of Stephen King's novel. Jack Nicholson puts in one of the all-time great scarifying performances as Jack Torrance, an aspiring writer who becomes the winter caretaker of the isolated Overlook Hotel. He brings his wife Wendy (the wonderful and recently departed Shelley Duvall) and their son Danny (Danny Lloyd), who possesses a psychic ability called "the shining" which allows him to see the hotel's incomparably dark and violent past.
Iconic scene after iconic scene follow as Torrance descends into madness. With memes flying around that replace Nicholson's head with Donald Trump's as he leers through the shattered bathroom door, axe in hand, yelling "here's Donnie!", it might be good to go and bask in the source material, and in a significantly less scary situation than will face the US and the world less than three weeks later.
