Set amid the restless and frequently chaotic energy of Lagos, When Nigeria Happens is a searing drama about young dancers trying to hold on to art, friendship and hope in the face of crushing economic realities. Directed by Ema Edosio, the film follows a tight-knit crew of street dancers whose dreams of creative freedom are threatened when one member’s mother falls seriously ill. Dance sequences are woven directly into the storytelling, turning movement into acts of resistance and release.

Edosio captures Lagos as both exhilarating and unforgiving: packed with colour, noise and possibility, yet constantly pushing its characters towards compromise. The film’s blend of social realism and expressive choreography gives it a strange, feverish texture. A landmark work for the growing international reach and ambition of contemporary Nigerian cinema.
