Bilal
By Charlotte Stace

Hailing from Philadelphia, Bilal rose to prominence as a member of the influential Soulquarians collective in the late 90s, collaborating with artists such as Erykah Badu, J Dilla, and The Roots. Known for his genre-blending style, he fuses soul, jazz, R&B and experimental sounds, creating music that’s unique and bold. But it’s his albums of cosmic soul and otherworldly jazz that have truly built his legacy - from 1st Born Second (2001) to Adjust Brightness (2024).
Notably, during the COVID lockdown in 2020, Bilal created his first EP, “Voyage-19”, in just three days. He collaborated remotely with various musicians through experimental sessions that were streamed live on YouTube. The three-track EP was released digitally the following month, with all proceeds and donations directed to the participating artists, many of whom faced financial difficulties due to the pandemic.
He’s an incredible artist who continues to push boundaries. Don’t miss him live.
