Christina Vantzou
By Kit Macdonald

Christina Vantzou’s music occupies the hazy territory between ambient, modern classical and experimental electronics, in which she creates slow-moving sound worlds to get blissfully lost in. Born in Kansas City and now based in Brussels, the US-Greek composer, musician and visual artist first came to wider attention through The Dead Texan, her exquisitely beautiful collaborative project with Stars of the Lid’s Adam Wiltzie. Her subsequent solo series, beginning with 2011’s N°1, established a distinctive language of blurred orchestral textures, processed voices, field recordings and delicate electronics.
Across albums including N°2, N°3 and N°4, Vantzou has explored composition as an exercise in atmosphere rather than in conventional narrative or melody. Her pieces often unfold almost imperceptibly, with strings, synthesisers and environmental sounds drifting in and out of focus. Vantzou is also a filmmaker and artist, and all three strands of her work are likely to be in evidence in her immersive, hypnotic live show. Doors are at 8pm, Howodd Bensonmum plays a warm-up DJ set at 8.30pm, and Vantzou is onstage at 9.30pm.
