Digital Freedom with Ian Pooley
By Kit Macdonald
Ian Pooley is a low-key living legend of the European clubbing scene, both for his longevity and for the remarkable consistency of his work as a DJ and producer. Born Ian Pinnekamp in Mainz, West Germany in 1973, Pooley's name started appearing on lineups in the newly reunited Germany and beyond while he was still a teenager, his blend of techno, house and disco striking a chord with an unusually broad range of club and rave audiences.
As a producer, the 1998 album Meridian effortlessly showcased the diversity of Pooley's talents and the subtlety and nuance with which he deploys them, and is rightly considered a landmark release. Brazilian music has exerted a particularly strong influence on his sound for many years now, and that side of his musical brain will likely be to the fore at this outdoor early-summer show. Support sets come from former Razzmatazz resident DJ Sandwich and Ion Pananides.
