Austin’s Holy Wave make psychedelic rock that feels permanently suspended between a hazy afternoon and the small hours. Formed in the late 2000s, the band have built a strong catalogue of music based on woozy guitars, motorik rhythms, droning keyboards and blissed-out vocals, drawing on garage rock, krautrock, shoegaze and ’60s psychedelia. Their 2013 breakthrough The Evil Has Landed established the basis of their sound, and subsequent releases such as Freaks of Nurture and Interloper have pushed it into more expansive and atmospheric territories.

There is often a deceptively relaxed quality to Holy Wave – songs can drift along on a steady groove before suddenly opening into noisy, distorted passages. Live, that contrast becomes particularly effective, with the band parlaying their carefully layered recordings into something loose, immersive and spontaneous.
