Julius Rodriguez
By Charlotte Stace

Julius Rodriguez arrives at MASiMAS Festival as one of contemporary jazz’s most exciting newcomers. Born in New York and based in Los Angeles, the multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer moves effortlessly between piano, keyboards, drums, bass and synths, bringing a fresh approach to everything he touches.
His music sits at the crossroads of jazz, R&B, soul, hip hop and electronics, with tradition and experimentation constantly bouncing off one other. He’s collaborated with artists including Wynton Marsalis, Kurt Elling, Nick Hakim and Meshell Ndegeocello, and his NPR Tiny Desk Concert showed just how much intensity he can pack into a performance.
For this show at Jamboree, he leads a quartet featuring Alonzo Demetrius on trumpet, Willie Barthell on drums and Max Gerl on bass.
