La Traviata 2025
By Charlotte Stace
Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece La Traviata comes to the Liceu this month. The opera is based on La dame aux camélias, a play by Alexandre Dumas which the writer adapted from his own 1848 novel.
It tells the tragic love story of Violetta Valéry (a Parisian courtesan) and Alfredo Germont (a young nobleman). They fall in love, and Violetta abandons her glamorous lifestyle to live with Alfredo. However, Alfredo's father, Giorgio Germont, convinces Violetta to leave Alfredo for the sake of his family's reputation. Heartbroken, Violetta departs without explanation. Alfredo later learns the truth, but by the time he reunites with Violetta, she is seriously ill with tuberculosis. They reconcile, but tragedy awaits.
After being first performed in Venice in 1853, it has become one of the most well-known and beloved operas ever to grace the stage. Now’s your chance to see it in Barcelona.
