Formed in 2021 in a seaside community on Japan’s Shonan coast, maya ongaku are a three-piece built around Tsutomu Sonoda, Ryota Takano and Shoei Ikeda who make music that is a hazy, unhurried blend of psychedelic rock, folk, ambient electronics and jazz-inflected textures. The band’s name is a term coined by them that describes an imaginary landscape beyond the edge of perception – an appropriately elusive description for music that seems to sit somewhere between consciousness and sleep

Their 2023 debut album Approach to Anima established their gently hypnotic sound, followed by the Electronic Phantoms EP in 2024. Since then, maya ongaku have become known and loved well beyond Japan, touring Europe, the UK, the US and Asia while appearing at festivals including Fuji Rock and Asagiri Jam. This show is part of a tour to promote their latest album, August's Nothing Space Music, which pushes their fascination with silence, atmosphere and organic sound further than ever.
