National ballet of spain
By Charlotte Stace
The National Ballet of Spain (Ballet Nacional de España) comes to Barcelona to present a new work by Marcos Morau at the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
The ballet takes as a starting point the work of the Colombian fashion photographer, Ruvén Afanador. Known for his portraits of musicians and film stars, Afanador was an avid follower of flamenco. He produced two books on flamenco Ángel gitano (2014) and Mil besos (2009) which offer a unique and striking vision of the flamenco men and women in Spain.
This ballet takes aspects of flamenco and Afandor’s photographic work and produces a performance that breaks the borders that separate artistic disciplines. The choreographer Marcos Morau works with Afandor’s capability "to create characters from modelling real people" and his creativity to generate worlds "that emerge from the beauty of light and shadows". The result? An exciting and innovative dance show that mixes photography and flamenco.
