Sarah Davachi
By Kit Macdonald
Since the 2015 release of her debut album, Barons Court, Calgary native Sarah Davachi has built a dedicated following among fans of experimental drone and ambient music around the world. At first glance Davachi can appear intimidatingly academic - she is also a researcher on organology, phenomenology and hermeneutics and holds a master's degree in electronic music and recording media from Mills College in Oakland, California - but be not afraid: she deploys her skill with synthesisers, organ, strings and acoustic instruments to create warm, slow-building soundscape pieces to get blissfully lost in.
Davachi's prolific recorded output since Barons Court - she has released nine more full-length albums in the intervening time, plus around a dozen EPs and seven film scores - is a good guide to what to expect at Casa Montjuic. She also recently started a wonderful regular show on the London radio station NTS that's well worth diving into to get a broader sense of her captivating musical sensibilities.
