La Mercè 2026
By Charlotte Stace

As summer comes to a close, La Mercè steps in to prove Barcelona always has one more celebration up its sleeve. The city’s iconic “festival of festivals” combines street arts, music, cultural traditions and performances, transforming the city into a colourful and shared stage. For a few days, normal life gets interrupted by giants, dragons, fire runs, circus, concerts, street theatre, projection shows, sardanes, castellers and so very much more.
The 2026 edition brings together nearly 500 activities across the city, with the usual mix of popular culture, Mercè Arts de Carrer, BAM and Música Mercè. This year’s guest city is Shanghai, marking 25 years of twinning with Barcelona and bringing more than a hundred artists connected to the city’s music, tradition and street-arts scene.
It’s one of the city’s most hotly-anticipated events on the cultural calendar and absolutely not to be mixed. A full programme of events can be found online.
