Smerz

Originally from Oslo and operating mostly out of Copenhagen, Henriette Motzfeldt and Catharina Stoltenberg have spent the past decade crafting a sound together that sit, in their own very accurate words, "at the intersection of genres, drawing inspiration from compositional techniques in classical music, the experimentation of computer music and the immediacy of pop music, all in the palettes of girly existentialism".
Their distinctive blend of experimental pop, club music and minimalist R&B has never been as well realised as it is on this year's superb second album, Big City Life, which is a sure bet for every end-of-year list worth its salt. Expect fragmented beats, haunting vocal loops and spoken-word passages and an atmosphere that feels both intimate and slightly unsettling at this live show, which is part of a tour to promote the Big City Life Edits companion album, which comes out on November 5.
