Thievery Corporation
By Roger C
For over 20 years, Thievery Corporation have occupied a unique spot on the US music scene. The duo of Eric Hilton and Rob Garza, along with scores of guest musicians, singers, rappers and MCs, have created eight studios albums and many remix EPs and compilations across a huge spectrum of styles: funk, jazz, latin, hip hop, Brazilian and their beloved reggae and dub. All of which they’ve achieved with little radio support or financing from any major labels.
To create their latest album, The Temple of I & I, out this month on ESL Music, they took refuge in the hills of Jamaica to write, record and collaborate with a host of local talent. The advance track, “Ghetto Matrix,” features heavy-hitting lyrics from their longtime collaborator, rapper Mr. Lif. A live Thievery show is always a special event – they’ve headlined Coachella and Lollapalooza in the past, with Hilton and Garza joined onstage by a host of special guests. Definitely not one to miss.
