A Spiraling Ascent
By Charlotte Stace
La Virreina welcomes its new exhibition, ‘A Spiralling Ascent: Looking Back from the End’. Curated by Martí Manen, it presents a selection of the work of Raisa Maudit.
Maudit establishes a series of core aspects in her exhibition: temporal aspects, linguistic aspects, emotional aspects and abstract aspects. The exhibition space, therefore, is transformed into an area where we are invited to explore a complexity that encompasses fear, error, belief and the necessary measures of violence.
To understand the present day, she takes the past as her starting point, beginning with The Beguines in the 12th century. Secretly organised into communities known as beguinages, this group of women decided not to marry, created their own economy and system of representation, worked to improve literacy, began to write their books and published the first autobiographies. Through her artwork, she aims to shed light on this group and draw parallels with women today.
