Opening of the Baluard Garden

Barcelona still has a few secrets hidden away behind its streets, and the Jardí del Baluard is one of the best. This green hideaway sits above a stretch of the city’s fourteenth-century wall, offering a chance to wander somewhere that usually remains out of sight.
When Barcelona began tearing down its defensive walls in 1854, this section survived because the Royal Shipyards were still being used by the military. Alongside it stands the Santa Madrona Gate, the last remaining medieval entrance once locked each night to protect and control the city.
Today, the old fortifications have traded soldiers and artillery for trees, quiet corners and leisurely strolls. Reenactors from the Coronela de Barcelona keep watch, giving it a real historical feel.
