Japanese drumming group Yamato group takes percussion beyond the limits of imagination. Founded in 1993, Yamato is a taiko drumming group based in Asuka-mura, in Nara Prefecture.

Their latest show, Hinotori: The Wings of the Phoenix, takes its cue from the mythical bird that rises from the ashes. Every strike becomes part prayer, part battle cry, building a story of resilience, renewal and finding the strength to get back up when life has other plans. The show features nine pieces such as Habataki (“Flapping Wings”), Toon (“Tone”), Netsujoh (“Passion”), and Masurao (“Brave Heart”), among others.

They perform with more than 40 taiko drums, each with its own name, character and sound. The largest, the Odaiko, was carved from a giant tree more than 400 years old. The remaining drums vary in size and tone, creating an extraordinary range of rhythms. Playing instruments of this scale requires immense strength and stamina, and the performers undergo rigorous physical training to master them.
