YWY Visiones
By Charlotte Stace
YWY, Visiones presents new works by Portuguese artist Pedro Neves Marques. The exhibition brings together films, interviews, exchanges, images and other elements conceptualized by other authors around the character, which contribute to expanding his world.
In 2017, Marques created a character, an indigenous android called YWY, a term that means 'land' or 'territory' in the indigenous Tupí-Guaraní language. Played by the Brazilian actress and activist Zahy Guajajara, YWY becomes a way of thinking about possible imaginaries about the indigenous future, gender, technology and science fiction. Multiple settings and stories, between films and installations, allow us to enter a futuristic, yet familiar atmosphere, with Brazil as a backdrop.
The main figure, YWY, is an android who cannot reproduce and is powered by energy or direct sunlight. With this exercise, Marques projects new and different horizons for the climatic emergency or the ethics of science.
