The practice of art
By Charlotte Stace
As part of the celebrations of the centenary of Antoni Tàpies’ birth, curator Manuel Borja-Villel organises a new exhibition at the Fundació Antoni Tàpies that pays homage to the artist’s art and life. It features a wide selection of works from national and international museums and private collections, covering the artist’s career from 1943 to 2011.
Planned as a retrospective, the exhibition presents us with the chance to view works that have been hidden from public view for some time now. It will present works that range from Tàpies’ first drawings and self-portraits, as well as some artwork linked to the Dau al Set group, and to his investigations into materials in the 1980s.
It will also include the matter paintings of the 1950s and his most experimental works with objects in the 1970s. The exhibition will conclude with pieces from the last two decades of his life, when he continued to pursue his investigations into the formal and material.
