DJ Krush
By Kit Macdonald
Hideaki Ishi, aka DJ Krush, was born in Tokyo in 1962 and was first inspired to pursue a life in hip hop in 1983 when he saw the seminal movie Wild Style. "When I discovered Wild Style I found what I really wanted to do, to express myself," he said in 2015. "Breaking, graffiti, rap, DJing - I always liked music so I chose [to] DJ. My body wasn’t built for breaking, DJing was the thing for me.
"Thankfully ditching a nascent career in the Japanese mafia (Ishi was a yakuza underling until one day when he found the severed finger of a friend on his desk), Ishi started making music and was swiftly recognised as a pioneer of Japanese hip hop. In its blending of organic and electronic elements and its mining of jazz, soul and hip hop, his debut album, 1994's Krush, set the stage for the following three decades and counting of excellent music and innovative DJing from Ishi.
