Fernando Botero
By Charlotte Stace

Palau Martorell presents Fernando Botero. A Universal Master, the most comprehensive exhibition of Botero’s paintings ever held in Spain, marking just over a year since his passing. Renowned for his signature style, Boteroism, characterised by monumental forms and rich colour, the Colombian artist’s work is instantly recognisable and has secured his place in art history.
Curated by Lina Botero and Cristina Carrillo de Albornoz, the exhibition showcases over 110 unpublished works from private collections, spanning sculptures, oils, watercolors, sanguine, charcoal and pencil drawings. It highlights Botero’s technical versatility and the depth of his artistic expression across different media.
The exhibition also explores the artist’s deep ties to Spain and Italy, displaying two exceptional works in Spain for the first time - his version of Las Meninas and Homage to Mantegna. Alongside these, visitors can view his celebrated series on Latin America, mythology, religion, still life and reinterpretations of art history masterpieces.
