Hamlet
By Charlotte Stace
If you’re a fan of Shakespeare, you may be interested in a new performance of Hamlet. Yet, this is no traditional Shakespearean retelling, it's a complete reimagining by the Brazilian theatre director Christiane Jatahy. Known for her new and exciting takes on the classics, for this play, Jathay has transformed Hamlet into a woman and gives her a camera to rework this classic story.
In a new female body, Hamlet awakens to rediscover, traverse and transform the past. When she goes back in time, she relives the history of this play and the many ways in which it has been brought to the stage.
Gertrude and Ophelia, Hamlet’s mother and lover, become representatives of everything that occupies Hamlet’s mind. All three women navigate between past and present, with the here and now of the theatre as their destination. Film also plays a crucial role in the play, in which it is used as a tool to amplify theatre and reality.
