Hip hop tribute
By Charlotte Stace
Head over to Sala la Nau this weekend for the night, HIP-HOP TURNS 51 YEARS OLD. Organised by TributeBCN, this event is dedicated to the celebration of the 51st anniversary of this musical genre.
Hip-hop legend has it that on a hot summer’s night almost 51 years ago, DJ Kool Herc, a resident of a Bronx apartment building in New York City, was hosting a back-to-school party for his sister and decided to try something new on his turntables. He began looping, breaking and scratching to extend the music so that people at the party could break dance for longer - he then added his own MC'ing. From this moment, hip hop was born.
This led to an entire cultural movement that altered the thinking of a generation and influenced politics, art and language. Sala la Nau brings a whole host of Barcelona's resident artists to celebrate this music: @lovelolabb, @jotapinche97s, @fatrodri.wav and @solokos99.
