Kiasmos
By Michael Mueller
Fans of rhetoric know that chiasmus is an effective speaking technique that involves the repetition of ideas in a symmetrical, but inverted structure.
It’s an appropriate namesake for the experimental electro project by Icelandic duo Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen, whose musical backgrounds are practically mirror opposites. Arnalds started out playing drums in a German metal band and has gone on to become an award-winning classical composer. Rasmussen is the electro wiz at Icelandic synth pop outfit Bloodgroup.
Together since 2009, they layer minimal techno beats under synth piano and strings that will take you from high to low, and back again.
