Lilit’s Daughters
By Charlotte Stace
The CCCB hosts the choreographers and dancers Sol Picó, Raquel Gualtero, Sonia Gómez and Anna Hierro who come to perform a selection of classical texts about nature and witches. Written by Carlota Gurt, they’ll be accompanied by music from the Barcelona Art Orchestra.
Lilit’s Daughters is a visceral narrative delving into the roots of the delirious, misogynistic, and murderous discourse surrounding witches, examining how this collective imagination was constructed to combat the fear women once (and perhaps still) evoked. It traces the mental and physical imprints left on women who dared to say “no.
”The piece features four solos of four defiant figures: Lilit, Medea, the Witch and Orlando, accompanied by original compositions inspired by texts from Euripides, Ben Sira, two Dominican inquisitors and Virginia Woolf. An incantation for the dead, it boldly declares: “If we frighten you, that’s your problem. We all come from Lilit.”
