By Charlotte Stace

American jazz singer and songwriter Madeleine Peyroux comes to Paral·lel 62 this month. Born in Athens (Georgia), a university and bohemian city, she grew up listening to the sounds of New Orleans. After her parents divorced, she moved with her mother to Paris when she was 13 and began her career as a teenager on the streets of the Latin Quarter. She joined a vintage jazz group called Riverboat Shufflers, followed by The Lost Wandering Blues and Jazz Band, with whom she toured Europe.
She was discovered by a talent agent from Atlantic Records, and released her debut album, Dreamland in 1996, which featured cover versions of songs from the 1930s and '40s (Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, Fats Waller). She found mainstream success in 2004 when her album Careless Love sold half a million copies. Now, after two incredible decades of songwriting and tourings, she’s back with her captivating ninth album, Let’s Walk (2024).
