Monica del raval
By Charlotte Stace

Walking around the streets of Barcelona, you’ll come across a colourful tapestry of interesting characters, yet none more compelling than Mónica Coronado. A girl from La Mancha, she came to Barcelona over 20 years ago. And throughout her time here, she’s become one of El Raval’s most recognisable prostitutes.
Now La Filmoteca brings us a documentary from Francesc Betriu on the life of this fascinating woman. Entitled Mónica del Raval (2009), it presents a vivid portrait of Mónica, as well as the realities of prostitution in Spain, focusing on the vibrant and gritty El Raval neighbourhood.
Known for her bleached blond hair, bold blue eyeshadow and eccentric wardrobe (often crowned with a tiara), we learn about her friends, clients and neighbours in the documentary. Betriu presents her story without judgment or prejudice, revealing how she has become an enduring icon of Barcelona’s streets.
