Music for Airports: Oval performing '94diskont' live
By Kit Macdonald
Since the start of this year, Music for Airports has been putting on shows at Casa Montjuic that befit being named after a classic Brian Eno ambient album. This has the look of its most interesting and high-profile booking yet, as the German producer Markus Popp, aka Oval, plays his seminal 1995 ambient-glitch album 94diskont, live and in full.
A majestically sparse yet intricate work, 94diskont was where Popp repurposed the glitches, clicks and skips on intentionally damaged CDs as elements of his musical palette, helping to pioneer the entire genre of glitch (which would be carried forward by artists such as Akufen, Matmos, Pan Sonic and Kid606) in the process. 94diskont stands up exquisitely well nearly 30 years on, and this live performance of it will be a hypnotic, immersive experience for longtime fans and glitch newbies alike. Doors are at 8pm and Music for Airports resident Howodd Bensonmum, aka DJohnston, plays a warm-up DJ set before Popp takes to the stage.
