Open Air w/ Berlin legends by SUW
By Kit Macdonald
As the name suggests, this Thursday-nighter at La Terrrazza is a celebration of the peerless techno scene of the German capital. Two longtime (to say the least) fixtures from the Berlin scene co-headline, and two locals - Ricardo Rodriguez and Diego Montiel - play warmup sets.
The better-known of the two visitors is nd_baumecker, pictured, a central figure at the greatest Berlin techno institution of them all: Berghain, and its offshoot record label Ostgut Ton. A resident of Berghain's Panorama Bar of many years' standing, he once said of his legendarily varied DJing style: "A well known choreographer once said: 'Surprise is important.’ I think this approach describes my DJ style best. I’m constantly oscillating between disco, house, techno, electro, broken beats and pop. Ultimately, I’m open to anything – from brute force to tender. I see the dance floor as an experimental field.
"The second of the Berlin visitors is Frankie Flowerz, a Malaysia-born DJ, producer and audio engineer who has been DJing worldwide since 1984, no less. His sets mine the fertile spaces between soul, funk, disco, deep house and techno.
