Penelope the sea is yours
By Charlotte Stace
The Maritime Museum invites you to its new exhibition, Penelope, the sea is yours. Inspired by Homer's epic poem The Odyssey, it pays homage to the Greek goddess Penelope. While her husband Odysseus was away fighting in the Trojan War, Penelope demonstrated her resourcefulness and patience by weaving a shroud during the day and unravelling it at night, to put off finding a new husband.
Of course, great navigators are renowned for their patience and inventiveness, much like Penelope. This exhibition celebrates six outstanding women in the sailing world at different stages of their professional careers: Abril Marfà, a fearless eleven-year-old sailor; Natàlia Via-Dufresne, the successful regatta sailor; Nora García, the Nacra 15 world champion; Maria Torrijo, the world's first woman to be a judge, referee and international regatta official; Andrea Emone, regatta sailor and aerospace engineer for the Alinghi Red Bull Racing Team; and Ana Pujol, multiple patín de vela regatta winner.
