Ramón Masats. The Silent Photographer
By Charlotte Stace
Foto Colectania welcomes its latest exhibition, ‘Ramón Masats. The silent photographer’. Considered to be one of the most influential Spanish photographers of the Sixties, the exhibition covers the first period of Masats' career, from 1953 until 1965, when he left photography for more than a decade to focus on film and TV.
It features original prints from his initial explorations, such as the Las Ramblas series, and photographs from his seminal books Neutral Corner and Sanfermines. Additionally, the display includes portraits of notable people and an extensive selection of both iconic and unpublished images, reflecting Masats' intuitive composition and ironic perspective on post-war cultural clichés.
The photographer’s work offers an interesting look at Spain under dictatorship, capturing scenes that transcend stereotypes. His portrayal of ordinary people and commitment to photographic freedom are evident throughout the exhibition, providing visitors with a profound insight into his artistic vision and the socio-cultural landscape of the era.
