Rotting in the Sun
By Kit Macdonald
This funny, sexy, shocking meta-comedy from 2023 is very much a film of two halves. We open with Sebastián Silva playing a version of himself: he's a young film director (named Sebastián Silva) living in Mexico City who spends his days snorting ketamine on the couch, researching suicide methods and being not terribly nice to his dog and his put-upon housekeeper, played by the brilliant Catalina Saavedra.
Silva takes a trip to a hedonistic gay nudist beach and party spot to try to snap out of his ennui, where he meets an obnoxious Tik Tok comedian named Jordan Firstman, played with gusto by the real-life comedian Jordan Firstman. He reluctantly agrees to direct Firstman's new TV project, and the two arrange to meet back in Mexico City. It's at this point that the film very decisively changes tack, with the most unexpected character thrust right into the heart of the action.
