The Human Hibernation
By Kit Macdonald
The Human Hibernation is a curious proposition in that it's an English-language film made by a young Catalan director. Anna Cornudella is a 33-year-old director and multidisciplinary artist, and after several shorts The Human Hibernation is her highly impressive first feature film. In it she explores an alternate version of humanity in which people hibernate during the coldest months of the year.
The plot concerns the disappearance of Erin, a child who wakes up prematurely from hibernation. Clara, her older sister, takes us on a journey in search of answers and confronts the pre-established narratives of the society in which she lives. "I wanted to strip human beings of their control over nature and tie them to biological cycles," Cornudella said recently. A highly intriguing idea carried off with verve and panache, The Human Hibernation is well worth breaking your own late-November hibernation for.
