The Tubs + Melcochas
By Kit Macdonald
When the excellent (and excellently named) Welsh post-punk group Joanna Gruesome split after seven years in 2017, founder members Owen Williams and Lan McArdle formed Ex-Void, who are still a going concern and have their second album scheduled for 2025. Williams, clearly a man with creativity and productivity to burn, also formed The Tubs with another founding JG member, George Nicholls.
Longtime friends and longtime weavers of tall tales in press releases, Williams and Nicholls initially claimed to have formed The Tubs when they were trapped in a Welsh caravan park in a storm and started writing songs to pass the time. Whatever the truth of the band's genesis, they have been hitting on a winning combination of indie-pop, post-punk and folk influences for around five years now, and excitement is high for their second album, Cotton Crown, which is due in early 2025. Expect a few previews at this show along with favourites from their rapturously received debut full-length, 2023's Dead Meat.
