Vinçon vs Ikea
By Charlotte Stace
Disseny Hub Barcelona welcomes the new exhibition, ‘100 IKEA objects we would have liked having at VINÇON’. Curated by the architect and designer Juli Capella, it has been designed to highlight the role of these two brands in democratising design, as well as the importance of design for people’s well-being. It also reflects on how concepts such as sustainability and functionality have evolved over the years.
The exhibition offers a game of mirrors that contrasts “global” with “local” and tells the story of two entrepreneurs who are similar in some ways, while being very different in others. All the while, it seeks to establish a dialogue between Scandinavian and Mediterranean design.
The concept, which is based on an original idea by Fernando Amat, the founder of the iconic Barcelona-based VINÇON store, goes as far as to invite visitors to imagine a parallel universe in which the globally recognised brand is VINÇON, rather than IKEA.
