White Magic
By Kit Macdonald
Rouge Cocktail Club in Poble Sec previously had live music on one Saturday per month, but now appears to be expanding its gig programme a little, which can only be good news. Gusset, ANADIE and Kuu also play shows there between October 18 and 25, but the most eye-catching booking of a packed week is undoubtedly the Los Angeles singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mira Billotte, who has been developing her mystical, dreamlike White Magic project for close to two decades now.
Billotte's debut album as White Magic, 2006's Dat Rosa Mel Apibus, expertly blended elements of folk, psychedelia, blues and experimental rock with lyrics exploring nature and spirituality, and was met with blanket critical acclaim. She has refined this style to a fine art in the years since and developed a semi-legendary live performance style in which she weaves immersive, otherworldly atmospheres from minimal ingredients: acoustic guitar, piano, percussion, the odd unconventional instrument, and her stunningly powerful yet ethereal vocals.
