Carlitos
By Ben Holbrook
Have you heard of Galvany? It’s a beautiful nook in Sant Gervasi. I love it; it’s smart, orderly and unscathed by the ravages of tourism. Carlitos epitomizes the area: an intimate bistro with thoughtful lighting and cozy furnishings – the ultimate first date destination. Here, Javier and his brother Carlos entertain a clientele of handsome devils with crisp collars under navy knitwear and dainty damsels with perfume that smells of money. It’s the kind of place I aspire to call mi local.
The menu elevates Mediterranean ingredients with Southeast Asian influences. Expect starters like ceviche with passionfruit & chili, nigiris with a zesty causa limeña, and tomatoes draped in marinated sardines, crispy fennel & sprigs of fresh dill. Mains include toothsome baked eggs with wild mushrooms & truffle, and lamb terrine with couscous. Wine is sourced from boutique vineyards across Catalunya; ask Carlos for a few suggestions. Just when you thought you’d seen it all.
