Pulpería Can Lampazas
By Ben Holbrook
For those with a penchant for pulpo (octopus), the thought of finding somewhere to eat it in Barcelona can be a deeply traumatic one. After all, quality pulpo doth not the Mediterranean produce.
It doesn’t take a denizen to know that the best octopi in Spain are found in Galicia, over 1,000 km away. Luckily, Pulpería Can Lampazas is here to make all your cephalopod dreams come true. This majestic space was designed by local hero Carlos Martínez and acts as a visual representation of how seriously they take their cooking. As the name suggests, they specialize in premium-quality octopus sourced directly from the Galician Rías and cook it the traditional way, in giant copper cauldrons.
Try the ardently authentic polbo á feira, which is boiled and generously sprinkled with paprika, or try it a la brasa (grilled). Be sure to use a toothpick instead of a fork if you want to earn the respect of the staff. Likewise, be sure stick to wines from the Rías Baixas DO.
