2001: A Space Odyssey 4K
By Kit Macdonald
Apposite timing for this big-screen outing for Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke's 1968 sci-fi epic, given the recent discovery in Colorado (https://abcnews.go.com/US/timeline-mysterious-international-monoliths/story?id=111289235) of the latest in a series of mysterious monoliths around the world, which have periodically sparked delightfully wild speculation about alien intervention for several years now. The film, which stars Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester and Douglas Rain, follows a voyage by astronauts, scientists, and the sentient supercomputer HAL to Jupiter to investigate an alien monolith very similar to those that have been popping up on earth lately.
Based on Clarke’s short story The Sentinel, 2001 is a mesmerising meditation on human evolution, artificial intelligence, and extraterrestrial life. Kubrick's innovative use of visual effects won him an Oscar and the film was nominated in three other categories. Is 2001 the best sci-fi film of all time? According to a host of respected critics and media outlets, the answer is yes.
