Anthony Rother
By Kit Macdonald
Germany's Anthony Rother is a true scholar of electro music: a sound researcher with a career going back decades, exploring aesthetics far beyond the boundaries of electro, techno and pop music.
Early EPs and albums helped shape the vocoder-driven sounds of artists such as The Hacker, Boys Noize and Terence Fixmer, not least the hugely influential Little Computer People all of whom released on Rother's own Datapunk imprint. He has worked with the likes of Karl Bartos, DJ Hell and Terence Fixmer - a who's-who of modern machine music royalty. Rother has been working on the hybrid sets that he will showcase here for around 10 years now, as well as coming out of a self-imposed hiatus with a slew of new releases.
