Beyond the visible - Hilma af Klint
By Charlotte Stace
The latest documentary showing at CaixaForum is Beyond the Visible - Hilma Af Klint (2019), directed by Halina Dyrschka.Hilma Af Klint was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings are considered among the first abstract works known in Western art history. A considerable body of her work predates the first purely abstract compositions by Kandinsky and Mondrian.
This documentary tells the extraordinary story of the visionary and pioneering artist. Inspired by modern science and the riches of the natural world, she began in 1906 to make a series of colourful, sensuous and bizarre works unprecedented in painting - later to be called abstract art. A recent retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum recovers the figure of Hilma af Klint, who was for years a creator forgotten by the patriarchal narrative and erased by the capitalist determination of the art market.
It will be shown in its original language - Swedish, English and German - with subtitles. Book tickets online.
