Themes of love, class differences and personal growth run through Emile Ardolino's 1987 romantic drama, which was made on a shoestring and initially planned to go straight to video after a one-week run in cinemas. Instead it became a cultural touchstone, making stars of Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, banking hundreds of millions of dollars and earning the love of successive generations of adoring fans.

With one of the most successful soundtracks of all time as a musical backdrop, Grey and Swayze play a cosseted 17-year-old daughter of a cardiologist (Frances "Baby" Houseman) and a working-class dance instructor (Johnny Castle) who fall in love at a fancy holiday resort in the Catskills in 1963. For fans, this is a great opportunity to catch the original on the big screen again before the release of the long-awaited official Dirty Dancing sequel, which will star Jennifer Grey reprising her role as Baby and is set for release next year.
